TOILET & SANITATION

#1 or #2, either way, wash your hands!

Using the toilet is a natural and normal part of living, and there are easy ways to handle waste when living in your Tiny Home.
Hey, it's a 5 gallon bucket!  It's easy to swing past a Home Depot and buy one of these for 4 dollars...or buy it off Amazon for double or triple that.  Believe me, it does NOT need to be fancy-- just sturdy.  This will serve as a toilet / footstool / guest seat.  The Tiny lifestyle is about SIMPLICITY.  Why spend a few hundred dollars on a fancy compostable or chemical toilet.  They are a lot of work to maintain.  I can save all that time, work and money and use a properly outfitted bucket.  Besides, with urban camping, there are plenty of bathrooms around...Starbucks, grocery stores, libraries....  The bucket is really for emergencies or for when you are camping far out beyond civilized areas.

I didn't believe this attachable / detachable plastic toilet seat and lid was worth it UNTIL I field tested it....and I was impressed!!!!  This seat / lid combo is EXCELLENT.  I weigh 200 lbs.  This seat is sturdy, easy to keep clean and snaps on and off the rim of the 5 gallon bucket.  It works best for small to medium framed people but also works, I estimate, for well for up to about 250 lbs.

Pick good quality 13 gallon kitchen trash bags.  You put one bag in the bucket as a liner and then put a second bag inside the bucket--inside the first bag.  The double bagging process protects against the innermost bag rupturing and spilling anything.  As long as both bags remain intact (no rips or tears) you can remove and dispose of the poop filled bag and leave the extra bag in place.  It's like taking the dog for a walk and carrying baggies to collect it's poop.  Dispose of properly in a landfill designated trash receptacle.

Putting a baking soda flow through box in the very bottom of the toilet bucket helps to absorb odors.  Buy a second box to put in your fridge / freezer unit.

Years ago I promised myself NEVER to use cheap toilet paper.  In my quest for quality TP, I've settled upon Charmin Ultra Strong.  It's my go-to product for when I have to go number two.  I get the MEGA rolls in the 4 pack.

Huggies makes the #1 best rated wet wipes.  They have a LOT of great uses.  Clearly, for toilet use, but also are great for taking a "Van Bath"--a good overall wipe down...face, neck, armpits, chest, groin and butt for those times I can't get to the gym for a shower.  I also use these for general cleaning in the Tiny Home...countertops, stove, utensils, etc...I also like to wipe my hands off after I pump gas or do any van maintenance, or even after I change out the Propane in my storage tank.  These wipes do NOT disinfect any surface.  I use a good alcohol based gel to sanitize my hands and then a wet wipe to wipe off the germicide.

Germ-X and Purell hand sanitizers are both good alcohol based gels that disinfect.  I keep a pump bottle around for after using the toilet or pumping gas.

This is a sturdy jug with a wide mouth screw top.  I use this as a pee-jug.  I like that it has a easy to grip handle.  The last thing a person wants is to drop or spill a pee jug in the Tiny Home.
